The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) Research Ethics Board (REB) ensures that all research involving human participants is conducted ethically, in compliance with the .
The REB's primary goal is to protect participants from research-related harm while supporting researchers in meeting ethical standards. This applies to all research at JIBC, whether funded by Tri-Council agencies or not.
The Research Ethics Board (REB) is mandated to review the ethical acceptability of research proposals as per JIBC’s Research Involving Human Participants Ethics Policy and the Governance of Â黨¾«Æ·Research Ethics Board (REB) Procedure.
The REB’s responsibilities include:
- Approving, rejecting, proposing modifications to, or terminating research involving human participants conducted under JIBC’s jurisdiction.
- Ensuring that research adheres to the highest ethical standards.
Full Board Reviews
- Submit applications by noon on the deadline date. Late submissions will be deferred to the next meeting.
- Submissions are recommended at least two weeks prior to the meeting date to allow adequate review time.
Minimal Risk Reviews
- Minimal risk research is reviewed by three REB members through an expedited process, typically completed within one week or more, depending on complexity.
- If deemed higher risk, the research will be redirected to a full Board review, which may extend the approval timeline.
Notification of Approval
Once approved, the Principal Investigator or primary contact will receive an email with the signed ethical approval form.
The REB meets on the third Thursday of each month (except August) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Meeting dates and submission deadlines
Important Notes:
- If no applications are received, the meeting may be canceled.
- To avoid delays, submit applications two weeks prior to the due date to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- All applications must be submitted to Applied Research by noon on the deadline date.
